Taos, New Mexico:
When one thinks of Taos, it's usually the skiing that comes to mind first. But Taos is more than a ski destination. Of course, Taos does have world-class skiing, but it is also an exciting and magical mix of cultures, creativity, and outdoor adventures. The city sometimes seems like something out of the past, with its adobe architecture, the ancient traditions of the pueblo, and historic buildings throughout the county. But it is also a modern town with plenty of amenities: delicious restaurants, a wide variety of
accomodations, spas, and a vibrant community of artists. And even when there is no snow, the area offers unsurpassed outdoor life, from camping and hiking to rafting and ballooning. The region around Taos is known as the Enchanted Circle, and includes the towns of Angel Fire, Eagle Nest, Red River, and Questa, all of which offer their own charms, ski slopes, and local fare. The beauty of the southern Rockies is awe-inspiring, and even the locals are thrilled each day by the sight of the snow-dusted peaks, the big skies, and the play of light on the mountains. Taos is truly the best of both worlds, the culture of a city mixed with the sense of community of a small town, all surrounded by the great outdoors.
